Princess Diana confided in George Michael about “grim” divorce and told him royals weren’t “very compassionate” in secret phone call

Princess Diana opened up to her close friend George Michael about the pain of her divorce in an intimate phone conversation that had been secretly recorded.

Diana told the late singer, who she first met backstage at a concert in 1989, that their split was “grim” and that the Royal Family “was not very loving” in the chat that has only now come to light.

The pair spoke in July 1996 when the Wham! star called her to wish her happy birthday.According to The Sun , the call was recorded by an answering machine at George’s home in North London. He gave the tape to his friend Andros Georgiou who was with George at the time of their chat.

Andros said: “George handed me the tape and said, ‘Here’s your retirement present’.”

George, who had seen Di in person at a dinner party at Sir Elton John’s home a few months before the call was recorded, then asked if she thinks she will get what she had asked for.

She continued: “I’m going to get three quarters of what I want and the quarter he can’t have, so there you go. Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I’m leaving, I tell you.”

The pair then talked about an Elton John documentary which George appeared in and Diana had watched the evening before.

“He invited me round to see it. With his boyfriend. I must admit I was kind of horrified,” George said before Diana laughed, “Play gooseberry.”

They also joked about how extravagant Sir Elton’s life is, with Diana comparing him to Imelda Marcos after seeing his huge shoe collection.

The singer then told her he’d love to see her, but Diana replied saying she would prefer to wait until things “quieten” down.

George’s childhood friend Andros said the pair had a very “honest” friendship, recalling: “On his third visit to Kensington Palace, they drank a bottle of wine together and George was so drunk she offered him a room for the night.
