Lagosians Angry With State Govt Over Below Par Obafemi Awolowo’s New Statue In Lagos

Yesterday, wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo was in attendance as Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode unveiled her grand-father, Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s iconic statue in the state.

Meanwhile, the imposing statue which is located at the intersection of Lateef Jakande Road and Obafemi Awolowo Way is now beginning to generate a heated debate on social media and amongst Lagosians living in the country’s centre of excellence.

According to our investigations, the new statue of the late sage and leader of the Yoruba nation is a far cry from the old one which was on Allen round-about.

Many are saying that the old statue was more befitting than this new one in all respects as it was well sculpted and totally reflected the panache and good sense of style of the late political colossus.

Many are saying that there was never a time Chief Awolowo made a fashion faux pax by wearing a lace-up (Timberland) shoe on his “trademarked” three-piece Agbada attire.

Others are also saying that the 12-feet statue is facing away from the traffic from either end of Obafemi Awokowo Way or even Lateef Jakande Road/Agidingbi which is noted for heavy vehicular traffic. It must be said that the statue is almost facing a 4-star hotel which is not ideal and in tandem with what “Awo” stood for.

However, according to Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode during the commissioning of the statue “Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s legacies and landmark achievements, have endured and remain a source of inspiration for progressive leadership in the country”.
